INTELLIGENCE AND SECURITY COMMITTEE ANNUAL REPORT PUBLISHED (29.06.04)

The Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) published its third annual report for the period of May 2003 to May 2004 on 29 June. The ISC was established under the Intelligence Services Act 1994 to examine expenditure, administration and policy of the UK's three intelligence agencies. In addition to its conclusions and recommendations, the report highlights the agencies' successes in the past year. The Government will respond to the ISC's report shortly. (PDF format).

FOREIGN OFFICE TIGHTENS TRAVEL ADVICE FOR INTELLIGENCE-BASED TERRORIST THREATS (22.06.04)

On 22 June the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw announced the outcome of the Foreign Office Travel Review. The Foreign Secretary said: "In future, in the case of intelligence-based terrorist threats, we shall advise against travel only in situations of extreme and imminent danger - if the terrorist threat is sufficiently specific, large-scale or endemic to affect British nationals severely. We shall continue to advise against travel in cases of non-terrorist threats (coups, civil unrest, natural disasters) on the same basis as before."

GARBO AND THE D-DAY LANDINGS (02.06.04)

On 6 June 2004 Britain celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of D-Day, the day the Allies invaded Europe. MI5 made a significant contribution to the success of the Normandy landings through its double agent Juan Pujol, codenamed GARBO, who has been described as the greatest double agent of the Second World War.
