Victor Karpov
(Larger version)
File ref KV 2/2665
This file covers a key figure in Soviet espionage work in the UK. Karpov ran OGPU operations in Britain from his base in Berlin, visiting occasionally as either a clerk for Arcos or attached to the Russian embassy. The file contains documentation on travel controls applied to Karpov and his family, and includes a Special Branch file on this aspect. There are Secret Intelligence Service assessments of Karpov and his role on the file, and it is clear that the belief was that Karpov "controls GPU activities in this country" (October 1932, serial 74a). The file, which contains photographs of Karpov and his family, notes his disappearance in January 1939.
