The threats to the UK's national security are constantly changing. Many of today's threats are very different in kind and scale to those that we faced twenty or forty years ago. Some sources of threat - for instance, the Soviet Union and its Eastern Bloc allies - have disappeared altogether.
Our priorities have changed over time to meet the challenges posed by political and technological developments as well the rise of new threats. There are two areas in which we are no longer active. These are:
