Spy Gadgets in World War II: Homing pigeons

The British and the Germans both used hundreds of thousands of homing pigeons to carry messages. Some pigeons were even awarded medals for bravery! They were often dropped from aircraft in special bags.

This feather from a captured pigeon was stamped with a special marking to identify the pigeon that it belonged to. The writing says "Wehrmachtbrieftaube" or "Defence Force Homing Pigeon" in German.
