MI5’s mission is to keep the country and its people safe. We work to protect the UK from threats to national security, including terrorism, espionage, cyber threats and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
As a Security Professional you will play a vital role in keeping MI5 staff, visitors and estates secure. Security Professionals work in a highly motivated team, maintaining the security of our buildings, controlling and monitoring the access of staff, visitors and vehicles, and conducting the necessary physical searches. As well as carrying out reception duties and monitoring security and CCTV systems, you will respond effectively to any incident or emergency and contribute to health and safety in the workplace.
Security experience is not necessary as you will receive full training that will focus on customer care, conflict management, first aid skills and fire safety, to enable you to do your job efficiently and professionally. On-the-job coaching will familiarise you with our systems and procedures. Full support will be given to enable you to gain formal accredited qualifications (currently City & Guilds) within the first year of employment. You will also receive training in order to obtain your Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence.
The development is excellent – each Security Professional is provided with the tools and tuition required to carry out their role effectively, confidently and lawfully, with appropriate training
As a Security Professional for MI5, you will work 24 hour shift patterns over a seven day week, involving a combination of two days, two nights and four days off. You will know your shift patterns well in advance so that you are able to balance your personal and family commitments with your professional life.
A common misconception is that due to the nature of what we do there is no work life balance at MI5. However, the reality is that we are not able to take our work home with us, so when you leave the office, you really are leaving your work behind you.
You really don’t need to have worked in the security sector before to apply to be a Security Professional, my colleagues have worked in a variety of jobs before joining MI5
