Sir Martin Furnival Jones (Director General 1965–72)

Portrait of Sir Martin Furnival Jones Sir Martin Furnival Jones (1912–97) qualified as a solicitor before joining the Service in 1941.

He served with distinction during the Second World War, working in a variety of roles at the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) and the War Office.

Sir Martin was promoted to the post of Deputy Director General in 1963 and became Director General in 1965. Under his management, the Service established a new career structure and salary scale that resolved long-running issues with the way that its staff were managed and paid. He retired in 1972.
